COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Anthony Von der Muhll is an experienced acupuncturist with over 15 years of clinical experience. This class addresses essentials of myofascial trigger point (MTP) acupuncture. Anthony will review the similarities and differences between MTP and other forms of acupuncture; when and why to perform MTP acupuncture; East-West patho-anatomy and -physiology of MTPs; contraindications, cautions, safety considerations, patient education and informed consent; and trigger point assessment, needling techniques, and outcomes for MTP acupuncture. MTP acupuncture treatment of the extensors carpi radialis longus and brevis, brachioradialis and supinator to treat tennis elbow and radio-dorsal forearm and wrist pain will be used as an example.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

  • Know and describe myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) and myofascial trigger points (MTP) in terms of AOM jing-jing (sinew or myofascial meridian) disorders, and their relationships to patho-physiology and -anatomy.
  • Know and describe etiology, natural history, and prognosis of myofascial pain syndrome in AOM and standard medical terms.
  • Identify probable myofascial pain through taking patient histories. Know and describe indications, contraindications, cautions, safety considerations, patient education and informed consent, needling techniques, and outcomes for MTP acupuncture.
  • Be familiar with MTP acupuncture for the dorsal forearm as an example of assessment and treatment with MTP acupuncture.
