COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are inseparable, sharing many theoretical foundations despite having distinct treatment principles. Both modalities approach disease from similar perspectives, including the location and cause of illness, pathological states, classification of conditions, and the effects of acupuncture on acupoints and the absorption of herbal medicine by the body. Ancient texts such as the Lingshu Jingmai Pian state: “If it is full, drain it; if it is empty, replenish it; if it is hot, treat it quickly; if it is cold, retain it; if it is sunken, moxibustion it; if it is neither full nor empty, treat it through the meridians.” Similarly, Jiuzhen Shieryuan emphasizes: “If it is old and stagnated, remove it.” These foundational principles of acupuncture illustrate that treatment methods should be tailored to conditions such as deficiency, excess, cold, and heat, and that mixed syndromes can be addressed through meridian-based approaches. The relationship between the properties and functions of the meridians—yin and yang, exterior and interior—further highlights the connection between acupuncture and herbal medicine under the guidance of the Eight Principles.

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the similarities and differences in the diagnostic and treatment approaches of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, emphasizing their close relationship.
